Evaluation

I have now came to an end of  ‘The New Elizabethan’ project and I am really happy with the overall process of it. I have not only enjoyed being on the make-up artist side but also the designing side of it. I have picked up new technical skills and having the chance to be a designer I have learnt how to communicate well with others. I am more confident in speaking out loud and going with my own choices instead of being wary in what I decide. I feel as though I have done well with working with another student and following their design. I have never done a blog before and I have exceeded my own expectations in how well I have done this, I found it hard to get to grips with it and hard managing the time to do so but I have caught up and am really pleased with my end results.  I have learnt different ways on how I can turn a traditional make-up into a contemporary one, which will be a useful skill and also learning why it is important to have research behind the project.

Overall I have really enjoyed this project and am happy with my end design as I feel I have created a good mixture of traditional and contemporary style. I am sad to see this project come to an end but I am happy to get started on a new project.

On the designing side Ross executed my design perfectly, he was really professional throughout the practices and assessment and I was really pleased to have him as my partner and make-up artist. He has came a long way from the beginning from not having a make-up background he has shown his skills and techniques he has learned and won't shy away from being pushed out of his comfort zone to try something new.

Their are certain aspects from my design he has just pushed through and had a go, this would be with the gold leaf as he had never worked with this product before and done really well in listening to what I wanted. I was really pleased with the overall out come of the make-up as he followed my designs and what I wanted perfectly. The adding of the Gold Leaf wasn't added in exactly the same places as the first practise of it but I understand as I the Gold Leaf is tricky to stick on, unpredictable and in all the same you could't really tell as they both look the same make-up.

He gets an 'A' for effort for meeting up and communicating with me about the designs, he would spend time to meet up and practice and have time to chat to share different ideas. He is  good team member and would always help  and give me advice if I needed it.

I have to own up and say I wasn't a very good team member on assessment day as I had gone out the night before and came in late with last nights make-up on. I was extremely apologetic but I was really out of line for doing this as I had not only jeopardized my own work but also Ross's and it was very inconsiderate of me. He had to clear all my heavy make-up off which took up his valuable time which was suppose to be spend doing my design. He kept his cool, had a laugh and was relaxed throughout the whole assessment he didn't rush through anything and was really professional. He had completed the make-up in the time we had and I was really proud of him, even when I had made a big mistake.

The application of the make-up was spot on and he overcame every obstacle. He has a very good manner about him which shines and his technical and practical skills where excellent. He is a quick learner and I believe he will go far in the future.

Ross has done really well with his design and it has reflected the project brief perfectly. He has shown the modern and traditional aspects and used numerous skills and techniques we have learnt throughout the course on his design. He has dug greatly into his research for his character and it shone through his design and it brings the character to life.

His ideas where quite Gothic which links in with the characters background, he has also added splashes to the face which has brought in an different technique, these splashes where quite unpredictable and would go everywhere so round the temple area I had decided to use tissue and hold it along the sharp blended line and splash the paint on then so it gave a sharp edge.

When doing the first practice Ross hadn't written the products he wanted to use down and was telling as I went through the make-up what ones to use.  I noticed that I had some similar colours that where from my own kit and knew they would work well with his design. I discussed what he wanted from the look which colours and how he would like it and he was happy with me to add some of my own products and trusted that it would work well. and he was happy with the end results.

Through the next practices I would check that he was pleased with everything and making sure he didn't want anything changed. He had made a netted head piece and neck ruffle to add to the make-up which where amazing and just pulled the whole make-up together. We wasn't sure how to stick down the front of the head piece as he wanted it sticking to his fore head. I had suggested spirit gum which was another product I had in my kit other than a glue stick he had suggested as I knew the spirit gum 

was more reliable as I had used it before.

Overall I wouldn't suggest any improvements for his design as I believe he has done a really great job, I would just recommend he write down the products used as I know he could remember them but it is just better to straight after make time to write them down. We worked well as a team meeting up for practises, keeping in touch anyway possible and sharing any new ideas that came into our heads, we helped each other out and reassure one another we where doing a great job.

He was really pleased with the way I executed the make-up and I was really happy with how well it went. I would love to be a make-up artist for Ross again as he is a really good designer and an overall amazing person.      

Collaboration with Fashion Photography student

I have been asked again by the same women I helped out on the other photo shoot to do the make-up again. I am really pleased I have been asked again as that means she liked the make-up the last time. I have been contacted through Facebook by her and she has given me all the details I need. She says she wanted studs and gems added to the look so I discussed if she pics the adornments she wants and sends me what she has bought and a mood board of the look she wants I will create some face charts for her.

I loved collaborating again with this student, she was really happy with the designs and my last minute change of the purple colour on the face chart to the blue colouring on the actual make-up. I am really glad she was pleased as I was really happy with the outcome of the make-ups and the whole process of doing it. I think next time I will go and watch her taking the images as I can learn the different lightings she used and the way she takes the photos, this will help with my digital image production side. Working with the students gives me the knowledge of what to expect when working with photographer an other people in the future. I certainly will be working with this student again and offering my assistance to other students who need my help.

I am really pleased with the outcome and the way the make-up was carried out, he was really professional with carrying out the make-up and done everything perfectly. I believe my make-up design has the aspects of Elizabethan make-up with the white base, rouge cheeks, light eyebrows. I have added contemporary aspects of make-up also using gold lead, pinky tones on the eyes and a heart shaped-pout lip.

I am really happy with my design and the make-up, if I could change anything I would change the style of my hair it was off my face for the pictures, but I would't' change anything about the make-up as I really like how it all comes together and has a backing story of Bess of Hardwick and this is what I would imagine her to look like.

 This was my timed assessment for the Elizabethan project, After many practices this is what the final outcome was, I enjoyed every minute of it, this is my first time being given someone else's design and having to be the make-up artist I was really nervous at first working with someone I had only just recently met and having them trust me with their design, but I got to know my partner and having practised this design gave me more confidence. I really enjoyed doing this project and sad that the Elizabethan era make-up are over but I am excited to start a new project next term.

I think I have done really well with this project from getting use to writing blogs and researching a lot behind this era, since I haven't been in education for a while I have surprised myself  with how well I have coped and handled it all. I loved going to museums and researching that way and watching films that relate to the era and it has also be interesting in seeing what cosmetics Tudors did use back then.

The timed assessment went great and I wouldn't change anything about it, I enjoyed myself and was happy with the outcome and the whole process and so was my partner he was happy with the end outcome, I loved working as a team in this and am really happy with the final photo's. Altogether I have had an amazing good start to this course and definitely think it was a good choice to come to Southampton Solent University.

So after seeing the new Through the Looking Glass film I have seen some similarities with Queen Elizabeth and the films Queen of Hearts.

The make-up reminds me of a 1920/ Elizabethan make-up, with the white base, rouge lips and red big heart shaped and frizzed hair as the Elizabethan. The thin lined eye brows remind me of the 1920's brows and then they have made the look more dramatic with the blue eye make-up and the fake beauty mark.

When I ever want to try this make-up look I have found a video I can look back at to help me re-create this Queen of Hearts look.

This is the second practice with my partner, I have really enjoyed doing this make-up with Ross he has a amazing design and I really enjoy doing it.  We have added more to the look with props, Ross has made some props for his look using net, this really pulls the look together and gives it the gothic/ funeral look he wanted.

I have done everything the same with the design as last time I copied my step by step notes on how to re-create the look as he didn't want anything changed to the look. I think his back story is really good to the character and love how he has gone down the death/ Gothic route. If I would change anything it would be that I should have been more prepared for this as I didn't realise that I hadn't cleaned my brushes for the practice, I know I can't be doing this when I am out in the industry so I will be ending this laziness habit now.

Here is the gold leaf face chart I have chosen, I had decided to try this with my partner and I really love the outcome of it and think this is what I am choosing for my assessment. I love how it all comes together and gives you more to look at. We had added gold leaf as a crown to the head coming down. Used Gold aqua paint in the hair and used them to create the gold freckles splashed to the face, and added the gold leaf gel to the eyelids. Other that that is is the same plain make-up we had done on the first practice.

My partner has done an excellent job and we have worked great as a team, he has done everything I wanted on the make-up and has listened carefully to the details. I think my end result is perfect and can't wait to do the final assessment. I wouldn't change anything about the make-up except just getting the white paint blended more down the neck but its just a practice so for the assessment it will be covered as I have discussed this with my partner.

Ross has decided to make his eyebrows flat in his make-up assessment, here is our practices;

We had tried a glue stick but I wasn't very fond of the outcome and found it tricky to use, so I used the synthetic wax and used it to flatten the eyebrow hairs down.

Next time doing this and in the assessment make sure I get all the hairs as I missed a few out this time, but either way I like the outcome of it and excited to do this in the assessment.

Bleaching eyebrows was quite popular 2014 for celebrities, I have came across them again as I have been researching about Elizabethans and their make-up and they would pluck all their eyebrows out or have really light eyebrows to give the look of a high forehead. 

I would not go to the extreme of bleaching my own eyebrows but I have found out how to achieve this look.

I have decided to see how I would block eyebrows if I had chosen a make-up design that would have involved doing so, I have bought so synthetic wax to cover and smooth down the hair and here is the end results.

How did I do this?
I used the synthetic wax to smooth the hair down, I have then covered the eyebrow with an orange concelar which will camouflage the brown eyebrow. I then applied setting powder over the orange making sure it is completely covered, I then applied the Kryolan cream white paint over the eyebrow area and blended out. I repeated this 3 times to get excellent coverage of the eyebrow and to cover the colour.

I am really pleased with how well is has turned out and am excited for when I can add this into one of my designs next time. I think it will work better if I didn't use a white base, it would cover up more on a natural skin colour.

products used: Illamasqua skin base 001, Illamasqua setting powder, Kryolan pink blusher, Kryolan cream white paint on lashes, Kryolan lip palette lc302

I applied the white base with a foundation brush, the setting powder with a big fluffy brush, the blusher with a smaller fluffy angled brush, used a mascara wand on the eyebrows and applied the lip colour with my fingers.

This make-up was quite simple and easy to do, the effects of the make-up looked pasty on the face I am guessing this is what the Elizabethan make-up would look like as they wore think make-up. I enjoyed doing this and thought I done really well but I don't like the textured and thickness of the make-up if I was an Elizabethan I would make sure I  had smooth make-up or would not leave the house.

Going for the Gold Eyebrow and Liner look. I want to incorporate the gold into the look and discussed with my partner different ways and he came up with the gold lined eyebrow which was just a mess around but was a good idea, like a dramatic 1920's eyebrow. As flicked eye liner is big I decided to add this to the look with Ross doing the task, this gave a more dramatic look. 

After trying this out I don't really like the outcome but it was only a play around, If I was to have chosen this idea I would need  to block the eyebrows out maybe using synthetic wax or a glue stick to cover my eyebrows and powder then use an orange paint to cover the colour of the brows then powder again and use a few layers of the white base, so the gold line for the eyebrows was more prominent. Also I think gold lashes would look better on top of the gold liner or even adding gold paint to the lashes.

After working on the original design. Me and Ross thought their was something missing, so we cracked on and here is the first design we came out with. we was trying to go for the gold veins coming out from the side of the face and adding Illamasqua Gold leaf gel onto the eyelids. The gold veins to give of the Elizabethan look when they would create veins onto their pale face to make the white make-up seem natural. I asked Ross to use the gold as I believe my Elizabethan lady in waiting Bess was a 'gold digger' and she would take money from her husbands. I wanted to gold to look like it was seeping onto her face to represent her money greed.

I liked the idea but didn't really like how the overall look came out like, I think I will thick of  a different way to use the gold.

Freckles

Freckles are so natural and are classed as a sign of beauty, I have the idea to incorporate freckles into the make-up somehow maybe with gold paint splattered or dotted on.

I want the freckles just to spread across the nose and over the cheeks but only lightly noticeable I think this will bring the aspect of when the Elizabethans wanted there make-up to look natural and they would add veins, but I am adding freckles instead to add the natural aspect of the white make-up.

I really liked my last practice make-up with my partner so I have kept the same simple make-up and just added onto it. My idea for these designs is adding gold somehow into the make-up as I want to show that my character is rich. Each design is different and  I have added gold in different parts of the face and using ways the Elizabethan's would do their make-up.

Design 1 

My idea here is I wanted to use gold coming from one side of the face adding veins which is what the Elizabethans would do to their faces so that the white make-up would seem to appear natural.

On this design I have thought I would add the gold into the eyebrows and give it a sharp winged liner look, something more contemporary. I like this idea but I am not sure about the eyebrows in my other designs I have gave them white ferral brushed out brows, so I thought I would mix it up and give these eyebrows a lined 1920's brow. I may have to block the eyebrows out and then work with my partner to help him block them but we will just have to see and time the process as we are under a time limit.

Design 3
 I have chosen for this design to use gold leaf coming down from the hair line and coming down scattering. I have made the eyebrows brushed through with white paint, I want the eyes to be blended into two colours that are more of natural colours. Adding small gold leaf onto the eyelids and giving a peachy orange lip. I have decided to add gold paint into the hair at the roots and headline to merge the gold leaf in.

This is the last make-up design I needed to try so I decided to try it with my partner and I really like the outcome.

This was my first time working on my design with my partner, I think it went very well but I think the make-up looks quite plain and I want to add something to it to give it more character. I have seen a few make-ups on Pinterest where they use Gold leaf in the make-up and I would like to try that out and some how add it to my make-up or even just add gold somehow to it.

I loved doing Ross's design, he has a very artistic design and am glad it is challenging me and letting me try something different.

Doing Ross's design went really well, I liked how the make-up turned out in the end, the dripping of the paint under the eyes was quite unpredictable but Ross liked the random drips. I loved adding the splatter of the paint over the lips and one of the temples as well it made the make-up look very artistic. The colour scheme works well with his design so altogether the first practice went well and I am happy with the end results.
